Talk:Symbology
From FISD Wiki
Martin -- good stuff in general, though I'm going to have to edit it some to try to bring it into line with something like the NPOV that is becoming somewhat of a standard in the wiki world.
This:
"A number of firms are examining the use of Instrument Identification symbologies to avoid situations where their own internal identifiers become an industry convention and thus being faced with the maintenance risks associated with such a scenario.
By Standards and Poor's effectively charging for using ISIN's and the risk that other ANNA members may wish to follow the same pricing model is another reason why alternatives are being examined."''
-seems to me to require a label of "Opinion/Interpretation" when stated as is. I'm not sure how many firms are actively avoiding having their identifiers become standards because they don't want to assume maintenance risks -- seems I hear more about people saying "it's silly to look at identifier IP as a revenue line because there are a lot more revenue opportunities available by having identifiers standardized." ... but mostly it's talk right now. Given the current business environment, I haven't seen anyone turning down potential revenue sources too quickly.
Folks in Europe in particular are pretty unhappy with S&P's pricing model regarding ISIN, I agree. Do you really think there's a lot of concern that other ISIN NNAs are going to try to adopt the same model?
I'll check in tomorrow to see if you've seen this.
