Recent developments in the Open Source world promise some significant new possibilities for large scale, complex information systems. Google's recent release of their proprietary mechanisms (Google Protocol Buffers) for integrating multiple data sources specifically cites their advantages over XML-based approaches. Typically, industry players will hold onto existing standards (XML, in this case) and ignore new options until someone (usually a more recent entry into the marketplace) brings to market an offering that utilizes the new technology (Protocol Buffers) for significant competitive advantage. Given the high costs associated with migrating legacy systems, is this dynamic slowing down somewhat?
